Alpha's Hunchback, loosely based on the Victor Hugo novel, aims to instil in the audience a sense of the importance of resilience in times of hardship and oppression from those more powerful than us, and how even small changes in our physiology and heart can have lasting impact.
Quasimodo leads the way for the audience to follow as he lets go of the pain of his past & finds his true purpose, becomes who he truly is and lives with love, instead of fear.
There's everything you would want, including sword fights, a lot of audience interaction and fantastic music. Extremely funny and appealing to children and grown ups alike, you will be pleasantly surprised at how we have woven together a story full of magic, intrigue, romance, adventure and yell-out fun!

Alpha's version of 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' uses the classic literature story to create a fun and crazy show that is suited to Age 5 or 6 to 14 year olds, as well as adults. The story follows Quasimodo and his wish to be handsome - if only the Golden Chalice would glow for him! A love story that looks beneath the surface, a villain who is as nasty as they come (you can't help but boo!), hilarious characters taken from Australian panto land and a happy ending worth celebrating, this story has a great theme and is perfect for responsible storytelling for children.
Specifics:
- Suitable for all audiences, families work well, age 5 upwards to age 15, although due to length of show you may want to advertise that the show is aimed at age 6 to 15.
- Modular set, about 8 metres wide. 3 scenes: cathedral/town square with cathedral doors, belltower and the beautiful inner cathedral. Fits perfectly on a stage, connects to wings.
Tech Specs:
- Alpha sets up all sound and lighting off-prompt. We can connect to 3-phase or 2 separate circuited standard outlets, so it's best to have these available off-prompt
- Sound desk with powerful amp and speakers. Unless your venue is large this will be sufficient for most venues. For larger venues, please have a DI Box or a headphone/quarter inch jack to take a channel up to your system. It is Alpha policy to always have our sound system set up in case there is ever a problem with a venue system.
- We will do a substantial sound test with a dB meter to get the levels appropriate for your venue, whether we are using just our equipment or connecting in to your sound system as well. This will be slightly louder than you may be used to with other children's shows but well within safety levels. This is due to the nature of the product, being a rock-concert style, and the fact we are appealing to a higher age range.
- Lighting will be done at all venues using our own equipment and operators. Please have a place ready to set up 2 x lighting trees in an appropriate position with good view of the stage area. This can be on the side or at the rear of the auditorium.
- Our lighting includes: 12 x Par 56's, 2 x 650w Selecon Acclaim Fresnel's, 2 x 250w Moving Head Intelligent Lights, 1 x 1300w Blinder connected to 2 x 6 channel Theatrelight Dimmers controlled by a LSC Minim desk
- All lighting is operated by Alpha crew. We have a complicated lighting plot with very specific and quick cues and Alpha policy is to ALWAYS run our own lights no matter the venue
- Some venues benefit from adding in the standard house rig in addition to the lighting we provide. We can call the show to your lighting operator to add additional lights at your venue.
- Fog Machine used - venue must have smoke detectors isolated
- All other equipment, set and costumes etc set up by Alpha.
